Simple & Joyful Summer Micro Wedding in Cody, Wyoming
What is it like to marry your high school sweetheart? "Your song" is probably a throwback from the 80s or 90s. You know your spouse so well that sometimes words are not necessary. Together, you've made infinite memories since high school. Both of your families are super close to each other. More than a lover, your spouse is also your best friend. Shelby and Chandler are high school sweethearts from a small town in rural Oklahoma. I was thrilled to be their wedding photographer and capture the magic of their western-style micro-wedding near Cody, Wyoming.

It was a mid-summer day, and the weather forecast called for sunny skies. On this day, two long-time sweethearts would unite as one in holy matrimony. Those in attendance were immediate family members from both the bride and groom's families. Since Shelby and Chandler have been together since they were teenagers, both families know each other well. I was on the scene doing what I do best. 😉
Shelby and Chandler opted to forego the stuffiness of a large black-tie wedding and instead chose to have a relaxed micro wedding at the picturesque Barrows Z3 Retreat. A centuries-old log cabin was at the heart of the celebration. Made from six genuine homesteader cabins combined into one, it features a mix of classic old west designs and modern finishes, which provide the ultimate western-style ambiance for an easy-going, Wyoming wedding. The surrounding landscape of the venue provided cow pastures and mountain views as far as the eye could see.
Chandler's rustic ensemble was a perfect choice for this Wyoming ranch wedding. The man of the hour showed off his style dressed in jeans paired with a suit jacket and boots.
Shelby chose to wear a modern off-the-shoulder wedding dress with a side slit and crisp fabric. It was elegant yet understated, which accentuated Shelby's radiant beauty. Shelby's joy lit up the room as she applied the finishing touches to her look.
Mother and father's first looks are unique at every wedding, and I love photographing them. When Shelby's mom and dad walked into the room, it was as if her entire childhood flashed before their eyes, seeing her dressed as a bride. Though a beautiful young woman stood before them, I think she will always be their little princess.
It seemed everyone was ready for a fun, laid-back Wyoming wedding and celebration, so I made my way to the altar located in the garden. The weather was gorgeous, and I could hear birds chirping in the surrounding bushes and trees. Chandler and his entourage began strolling down the aisle, followed by a cowboy boot-wearing flower girl. Shelby rounded the corner and looked enchanting as she came into sight.
Shelby's dad graciously walked by her side and presented her to Chandler. With Shelby and Chandler now facing each other at the altar, the years-long bond between them was evident. It was clear that this ceremony was a long time in the making. The thought of them as awkward teens in high school brought a happy tear to my eye as I captured these romantic wedding portraits.
No matter how far people steer away from traditional weddings, one tradition remains intact. The kiss! Shelby and Chandler's wedding ceremony was unbelievably sweet and full of promise. The garden setting was simple, peaceful, and elegant. I think there's so much beauty in simplicity, and this particular Wyoming micro wedding was simply beautiful.
Before making their exit, everyone paused and enjoyed the silence. I could feel the energy in the air when suddenly a light breeze blew through the sun-drenched garden. Magical moments like these make me so happy to be a wedding photographer.
Back at the cabin, it was time for everyone to kick back and settle in. The sun began its descent, and the deck was comfortable and shaded. The wedding reception festivities commenced with the official signing of the marriage documents. I love how the minimalistic décor accentuated the naturally occurring beauty of this Wyoming wedding venue as well as the bride and groom. I couldn't help but think it must be wonderful to meet your soul mate at a young age and even more wonderful to marry your first love.
Next, warm sentiments sprinkled with wisdom and laughter were shared as people began toasting the marriage of Shelby and Chandler. I've photographed many weddings over the years, yet I seldom come across one where the guests are all family members. This particular wedding was even more unique because both Shelby and Chandler's families have known each other for many years. The more time I spent in their company, it was easy to see that these families are also good friends.
The festivities of Shelby and Chandler’s wedding reception unfolded freely. As afternoon transitioned into dusk, it was time to pop the champagne and cut the wedding cake. I'm always curious if the bride and groom will smash a little cake on each other's faces. Of course, these two did. 😊
Time for that unforgettable moment; Shelby and Chandler's first dance. As a wedding photographer, the first dance is always one of my most anticipated photo opportunities. I had to wonder if this brought back memories of their high school prom.
I was having so much fun capturing these two while they laughed and danced. Chandler was twirling Shelby around the dance floor, and their smiles were highly contagious. Then, they playfully added a little two-step into their choreography, which was appropriate for a Wyoming wedding.
Shelby's dad and Chandler's mom took to the dance floor. Afterward, Shelby tossed her bouquet. Then, Chandler removed Shelby's garter and threw it to all the bachelors.
With the sound of crickets and cicadas now buzzing in the distance, it seemed like a good time to ask Shelby and Chandler if they would like to step away from the cabin and pose for some newlywed shots. They happily obliged my request, and we made our way to the pasture where I captured these romantic moments.
Wyoming is known for its rugged beauty, and because of that, I love photographing outdoor Wyoming weddings. The ruggedness of the landscape has a masculine feel, which pairs well with the elegant aesthetics of weddings. Shelby and Chandler let their natural spirits shine, and they were very much at ease as they lovingly posed together.
We returned to the garden, where Shelby looked her most enchanting. Bubbly and adorable, Shelby puts a smile on my face. I do believe she has that effect on everyone she encounters. I'm truly happy for these high school sweethearts! I am so glad I got to be part of their Wyoming wedding.
